    Consultation to tackle Poverty

The "Strategy and Partnerships team" at Cambridge City Council wanted to know what people thought of local work to reduce poverty by completing their online survey, and gave us the link below. Sadly the time for this has already passed by.

    • Anti-poverty Strategy consultation

The City Council is developing an Anti-poverty Strategy [PDF, 1.2MB] for Cambridge and was seeking views in a consultation on whether:

    • it has understood the nature and impact of poverty in the city;

    • it has identified a way forward that will help alleviate poverty in the city;

    • it has identified actions that will make a difference; and

    • there is evidence to suggest we should be exploring any other possible courses of action or intervention.

    • The end of the consultation on the draft strategy has passed but hopefully there might be a chance for people to give more feedback later in the process.  It was great that they asked us to advertise this consultation on our website and hopefully people were able to do their survey and respond. Hopefully this will help them get their approach and actions right, as they hoped!

Thank you for taking the time to get involved.

If you have any questions about this consultation, contact the Strategy and Partnerships team at

Tackling Poverty and Isolation in Cambridge

      A Joint Approach
      Thursday 05-03-2015,  10:30 am - 3 pm
Buchan Street Neighbourhood Centre, Cambridge  CB4 2XF

If you wish to attend, please COMPLETE the attached booking form in full and return it to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or post it to,

      CONFERENCE,
      Buchan Street Neighbourhood Centre,
      Cambridge
      CB4 2XF

Please take extra care to ensure you inform us of any allergies or special dietary requirements you may have.

We have limited places available, so if there is a very large demand, we may not be able to accept all bookings. Please book quickly to avoid disappointment. If you book and cannot attend, please cancel ASAP so we are able to offer the place to somebody else.

Tackling Poverty and isolation is a major task and working in partnership with others is key to developing a successful outcome. The City Council has recently launched its Anti Poverty strategy and some of the key themes are focussed on in the workshops on the day.

We hope that you will find this a useful day for finding out what initiatives are currently happening around the city, looking at how we can work together to add value to what is already provided and to look at new developments to meet needs identified in the community.

The day will include lunch provided by foodcycle.

Further details in the attached programme and workshops documents.

      Giving Tuesday 2014

      GivingTuesday-logo-2014-11-28.png

The UK campaign will be led by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), working closely with Blackbaud, the Cabinet Office, and a wide range of charities, companies and sector bodies, building on the enormous success of the campaign in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Singapore and across Latin America.  GivingTuesday falls directly after Black Friday and Cyber Monday and asks people to do one simple charitable act on the day as part of their run up to Christmas.  The campaign aims to encourage thousands of charities, both big and small, to get involved in the day, as well as businesses and the wider public.  The collective impact of their donations, voices, volunteer hours, and resources will help increase and enhance giving around the world in places and ways where it is needed most in the festive season.

      Council for World Mission

      Monday 10-11-2014,  2.15 - 4.45pm
Cambridge Ethnic Community Forum, "The Courtyard", 21 b Sturton Street, Cambridge  CB1 2SN

“The European Region of CWM will be hosting a Theological Consultation which will be attended by the member churches of the European Region and the Africa Region.  The Consultation is being run by the Reflection and Research Programme department of CWM and is being hosted by the European Region at Westminster College Cambridge.  The Consultation will be focussed on putting mission at the heart of theological education and to discuss this [CWM] will be considering two central themes: disability and migration.”

It was felt that CECF would offer an insight into the work of local community groups in the UK that are set up to offer support and services to migrants of all ranges which would contribute to our discussion in a meaningful way.

“Migration is a huge political and social issue in both the European and African region, though in different ways.  The theological consultation will take place within 6 months of a UK general election, so in all likelihood migration will be an even bigger issue by November.  [CWM] will consider the effect immigration has on communities, church, social fabric and also link between the current immigration situation and economics and ask if social attitudes to immigration are shaped by economic realities (or perceptions of economic realities).  This discussion could include the whole issue of the cultural identity of second generation migrants and how communities integrate (or not).”

CWM are visiting the Cambridge Ethnic Community Forum's offices on Monday 10th November.  The visit will hopefuly consist of approximately 13 people from across Europe and Africa who hope to meet with volunteers and service users.  The visitors would like to engage in conversation with your volunteers and users, in order to gauge from them the needs and challenges facing migrants to the UK.  The visit would be in the afternoon of the 10th November and will last from 14:15-16:45 giving time to talk about the work of the Forum and have a period of discussion”

Even if you can only stay part of the visit that would be appreciated.  Refreshments will be provided.  Please let CECF know asap if you can attend.  Thank you.

Cambridge City Council - Community Consultation

      CityCouncil-Banner

You can download a few examples of ideas for new or improved facilities eligible for developer contributions funding by visiting their website.

      Background

Last autumn, the City Council consulted widely for ideas for new/improved facilities across Cambridge that would help meet local needs arising from new housing and other development.  The feedback received informed a first priority-setting round of decisions to invest over £1.5 million of developer contributions (from Section 106 agreements) into local capital projects.  These include: extensions to community centres; skate parks and BMX tracks; trim trails and new play area equipment; biodiversity and habitat creation for wildlife at local nature reserves; and drainage and pathway improvements to help people to enjoy local open spaces more.

They are running a second priority-setting round this autumn to invest more developer contributions into local community centres/meeting places, open spaces and play provision, sports facilities, public realm improvements and public art projects.  Their download is a summary of the types of suggestions received so far that are eligible for developer contributions funding.  More details (including existing specific ideas for each area of the city) can be found on our Developer Contributions web page www.cambridge.gov.uk/s106

As well as giving another chance to fund existing suggestions that were not prioritised in the first round, they are keen to make sure that everyone who lives in Cambridge has had a chance to have their say, particularly sections of our communities who seemed to be under-represented at the consultation meetings they arranged last autumn.

      How to have your say

Please tell them your suggestions for new or improved local facilities in your part of Cambridge.  Your ideas don’t have to be detailed, but it would help if you could tell them:

      • what the project would be (eg, the extension or refurbishment of a community centre)

      • where it would be (eg, which existing facility or which neighbourhood or ward in Cambridge)

      • why is it needed and how would it help to meet local needs

If your have any comments relating to project ideas for the West and Central parts of Cambridge, it would be helpful if you could let Tim know as soon as possible. If there are any ideas for the rest of the City (North, East and South Areas), please could you contact Tim to let him know by Thursday 12th September.

If you would like to discuss this further, or if you need this information in an alternative format or language, please telephone the City Council on 01223 457 200 and ask to speak to:
Tim Wetherfield, Urban Growth Project Manager
      or write to him at;

      Ugandan Asian 40 Year Celebrations

The former President of Uganda, General Idi Amin, expelled some 50,000 Asians from the country, very many of whom had British passports, in 1972. Almost all were of Indian origin.

Many emigrated to the UK and theirs has been a huge success story, not only in places such as Leicester, Harrow or Brent, but also in Peterborough. Unlike other places in the UK, which discouraged Ugandan Asians from arriving, Peterborough City Council positively welcomed them and the 1st family came to the City on 23rd September 1972.

2012 is the 40th anniversary of this arrival and PREC's Ugandan Asian Working Group have organised various events in celebration, which include:

      • Tuesday 09-10-2012 - Meet And Greet, Jena's Restaurant, 35 Brook St, Peterborough - £12.00

      Black History Month 2011

      01-10-2011 to 31-10-2011

Get down to the Fitzwilliam Museum and find out about the Ancient Egyptian’s views of hair and beauty and the importance of headrests in life and death. Also follow the Kemet Trail to get a flavour of life in Ancient Egypt.

Different in England – two lectures reflecting two different times – one about Alexander Crummell, an African American from New York, who in 1849-53 read for a degree at Queens' College and the other sees Carlene Firmin, Yasmin Alibhai-Brown and Matthew Ryder discuss whether the race debate is over.

Come and party at the free family event with loads of activities for all age-groups. You can’t be either too old or too young, there is something for everybody! Later the same evening Africans in Cambridge will host a party - food, music and dance, only £5 per ticket.

      Plus much more...
