Homelessness Week
Homelessness Week is here! 28th Jan - 5th Feb 2012
FLACK will be involved in several events that we thought you'd like to hear about.
On Friday 27th from 6pm FLACK took part in a Charity Fair in the Cambridge Union on Bridge Street, demonstrating how to make a beer can camera and turn plastic bags into desirable handbags - it was a lot of fun!
On Saturday 28th and 29th several members of FLACK were delighted to have received free tickets to see Silent by the astonishing Irish new play company - Fishamble. The play has received rave reviews and is a one man show about homeless man, McGoldrig who once had splendid things. But he has lost it all – including his mind. He now dives into the wonderful wounds of his past through the romantic world of Rudolph Valentino, in this brave, bleak, beautiful new production.
FLACK also took part in a homelessness discussion at the Junction Sunday 29th at 2pm at the Junction and then had to race across the city for the Annual Cambridge Link-Up Concert at the Leper Chapel on Newmarket Road featuring Street Voices, Toby Peters and members of FLACK. The concert started at 3.30pm with tea and biscuits on Sunday 29th February.

Launch of UK Disability History Month
Tuesday 22-11-2011, 10.30am - 2.30pm
The Guildhall, Market Square, Cambridge CB2 3QJ
Please follow this link to our webpage at

to see the posters for a couple of the events that were lined-up for the month.
The launch day started at 10.30 am with stalls from representative groups, service providers and commercial enterprises who joined in the celebrations.
At 11.30 am the Mayor of Cambridge and the Chief Executive of Cambridge City Council welcomed the audience and the main event started.
There were contributions from Fran Williamson, a local medal winning Paralympian; Andy Lee who entertained us with stories about life with his support dog; Ruth Brannan with some of her team talking about the ‘You Can Bike Too’ project which provides specialist bikes for people with disabilities; and their head-liner Laurence Clark with his Edinburgh show ‘Health Hazard’. Lunch will be provided.
This event celebrated the achievements and potential of disabled people in line with the wider stated aims:
‘UKDHM is an annual event creating a platform to focus on the history of our struggle for equality and human rights. The theme for this year was “Celebrating Our Struggle for Equality”, in order to reflect on our history as disabled people and our struggle for our rights.’
The event was for disabled people to celebrate their lives and achievements, and for their able-bodied friends and family to share in the celebration and increase their awareness of the progress that disabled people have made towards equality.

Different in England – two lectures reflecting two different times – one about Alexander Crummell, an African American from New York, who in 1849-53 read for a degree at Queens' College and the other sees Carlene Firmin, Yasmin Alibhai-Brown and Matthew Ryder discuss whether the race debate is over.
Come and party at the free family event with loads of activities for all age-groups. You can’t be either too old or too young, there is something for everybody! Later the same evening Africans in Cambridge will host a party - food, music and dance, only £5 per ticket.

World Peace Day
Tuesday, 20-09-2011
From Bollywood to flamenco, a kaleidoscope of music and dance in celebration of the city’s diverse population was hosted by the Cambridge Ethnic Community Forum (CECF).
In a packed Emmanuel United Reformed Church in Trumpington Street, representatives from a plethora of faiths spoke of how their religion or denomination embraced peace – between colourful visual and musical interludes.
World Peace Day was established by the United Nations in 1981 and is usually celebrated on September 21.
But due to the busy lives and previous commitments of the Cambridge residents taking part, the city’s celebration was held on Tuesday evening.
